Crafting a compelling personal statement – How to get started

Steve Martin • Mar 04, 2022

The personal statement is a key part of any UCAS application.

It’s the part of the application where you, the applicant, have the most control.

You’ve got 4000 characters including spaces (about one side of A4) to tell the admissions tutor your personal story.

5 Top Tips:

  1. Think of it as a MOTIVATION statement.
  2. SHOW, not tell. Give evidence and examples of your achievements and qualities.
  3. Don't worry about structure at first. You'll end up conducting many drafts.
  4. Gather information in Unifrog (or a note taking app) from the beginning of year 12.
  5. Consider using mind-mapping software to get ideas out of your head.

8 Things to think about:

  1. Why are you applying to study that particular course?
  2. What do you find fascinating about the subject?
  3. What have you really enjoyed during your classes and what have you done to find out more?
  4. What sort of things have you read/watched/experienced that aren't taught in class.
  5. Have you completed any online courses?
  6. Have you listened to any TED talks? - what did you learn/find fascinating?
  7. What qualities do you have as a person? - give evidence and examples.
